Army Wheeled Vehicles

In this exhibit you can clamber into an armoured personnel carrier and get a sense of what little space soldiers actually have.

In September 1943, during the German occupation of Denmark, the German Wehrmacht disbanded the Danish army and confiscated about 1,000 vehicles, 500 motorcycles and 10 tanks. After the liberation in 1945, the rebuilding of the Danish army initially used Swedish wheeled vehicles, transported from Sweden by the Danish Brigade. These were supplemented by the purchase of second-hand British and Canadian equipment for the Danish units deployed in the Allied occupation zones in Germany (1947-1958).

Denmark’s membership of NATO in 1949, military aid and the 1951 Defense Act marked the start of the construction of today’s mobile army.

This exhibit features a variety of wheeled vehicles used in the army from 1945 until the autumn of 2000, including the Canadian GMC M6 personnel carrier – nicknamed the ‘Bog Pig’.
