Departments within Vardemuseerne
Vardemuseerne is more than the museums and exhibitions you can visit
Behind the scenes, a number of specialist departments work to preserve, research and communicate the area’s nature, culture and history.
Here you will find NaturKulturVarde, which creates learning and experiences with nature and culture; ArkVest, which works with archaeology in West Jutland; and the Historical Collection from the Occupation Period, which preserves and communicates material and knowledge about the years of occupation.
NaturKulturVarde
Activity, learning and experience
NaturKulturVarde is Vardemuseerne’s schools service and education department, with West Jutland nature and cultural history at its core. Here, knowledge becomes experiences through activities, teaching and storytelling that bring both nature and history closer.
NaturKulturVarde offers professional teaching, nature guidance and interpretation for schools and institutions, children, young people and adults, as well as locals and tourists. There are also programmes aimed at people with special needs. What the activities share is curiosity, experiences and new knowledge – and the opportunity to get up close to West Jutland nature and cultural history.
ArkVest - Archaeology West Jutland
Archaeology West Jutland – ArkVest – is part of Vardemuseerne and Ringkøbing Fjord Museums and is responsible for archaeological work in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality and Varde Municipality.
ArkVest works with excavation, research, collecting, registration, preservation and communication of the area’s ancient monuments. Through its archaeological work, ArkVest gathers and produces new knowledge about the area’s history, which forms the basis for both research and communication of West Jutland’s past.
Historical Collection from the Occupation Period
The Historical Collection from the Occupation Period (HSB) is an archival institution focusing on the years of occupation and the period immediately before and after.
The collection contains extensive archival and book material and is open to anyone seeking knowledge about the period. At the heart of the collection is a unique holding of illegal newspapers, leaflets, books, songs and other material from the occupation period. In addition, there are, among other things, accounts from resistance members, German and Nazi material, personal archives, and research archives from recognised historians.
Over many years, HSB has researched the history of the occupation period and published a number of books about the period. The collection also communicates its knowledge through teaching and lectures on the years of occupation and the post-war period.
